How will parents know if an emergency occurs?

Salisbury Township School District uses a mass communication system, the District website, Facebook, and X as part of its ongoing efforts to communicate with students, families, and staff. In an emergency, the mass communication system will be used to contact parents directly via telephone as quickly as is possible. Bus accidents, severe weather, and power outages can trigger a phone call, as well as emergencies that may cause a school to evacuate, shelter, or lockdown.

Every parent's child attending Salisbury will be automatically signed up to receive messages, though it is up to you to keep the school informed of any changes to email address, phone number, or emergency contacts. If any of that information is changed, you will need to contact the school immediately to update it.

What can the parents do to prepare for a school emergency?

  • Ensure the school your child is attending has accurate emergency contact information.

  • Identify those authorized to pick up your child in the case of a school or community emergency and you are not able to.

  • Make sure anyone listed as authorized to pick up your child is also listed as an emergency contact in the student's emergency information.

Open up a dialogue with your child about being prepared for emergencies. This will include understanding drills, such as fire drills, and taking them seriously. It will also include recognizing anything that is out of the ordinary or unusual during the school day and reporting it to a trusted adult at school.

What should parents do if a school emergency occurs?

  • If there is an emergency at one of the Salisbury schools, wait until official instructions have been communicated using the mass communication systems. Make sure to listen, as this telephone message will inform you of what has happened and what, if anything, you should do.

  • Do not call the school. Phone lines and staff are needed for emergency response efforts and incoming calls can make it harder for staff to communicate with the parties that will support the school through the emergency.

  • Please do not go to the school unless instructed. Traffic congestion can impede the movement of vehicles, reduce response times for first responders, and can make a crucial situation much worse.

How are parents reunited with their child/children in case of an emergency?

  • Students will be kept in school or at another shelter site until it is safe to release them. If a normal bus dismissal cannot happen, you will be asked to pick up your child. Any and all reunification sites and the time when you meet your child will be communicated. Make to sure to closely monitor all communications from the District.

  • When you go to the reunification site, please bring picture I.D (e.g., a driver's license, passport, etc.) and check in with school officials.

  • Students will only be release to guardians or emergency contacts who have acceptable photo identification and who are named in the student information database. If a listed contact cannot pick up their child, the child will remain at the reunification site until confirmation to release the child can be received from a listed contact. Make sure your child's contact information is up to date.

What should parents do following an emergency at school?

  • Listen to and acknowledge your child's feelings and concerns.

  • Reassure your child that not only are they safe, but that school is safe as well.

  • If needed, seek help either from school personnel or a mental health professional.
